In recent years, the issue of climate change has become a global problem and human interest in it`s growing. This process leads to the melting of glaciers, rising river levels, mudflows and, most importantly, the lack of clean drinking water. In this regard, the attention of the world community, especially the top leaders of the countries, is increasing to prevent it, and they are taking drastic measures.
One of the factors contributing to climate change is mountains. As Tajikistan is a mountainous country, it is impossible to stand aside. In this regard, the issue of climate change along with human society is not in the focus of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. A few years ago, there were more than 14,000 small, medium and large glaciers in Tajikistan, but today more than 1,000 of them have disappeared, which is very worrying.
Out of this disturbing situation in Tajikistan, the Head of State Emomali Rahmon always strongly emphasizes in his speeches and calls on the international community to cooperate.
In this regard, we can recall the article “Water for Sustainable Development” by President Emomali Rahmon, which was issued in the margins of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on the occasion of the beginning of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028”. The article, entitled “The Impact and Damage of Climate Change on Water-Related Disasters, is More Explicit. Between 2000 and 2016, floods and mudslides killed more than 107,000 people. By 2050, flood-prone capacity is projected to reach $ 45 trillion. One of the serious consequences in this case is the destruction and failure of various infrastructure of the national economy.”
In addition, on September 27, 2015, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon addressed the interactive dialogue of the 2015 Summit in the United States on “For the protection of our planet and in the fight against climate change”, in particular: “Over the past decade, Tajikistan has seen a significant reduction in the area of glaciers that are vital for the whole of Central Asia.According to available data, up to one thousand glaciers have been destroyed in our country due to climate change. According to preliminary estimates, the study of the sex patterns of Tajikistan’s major glaciers, especially the Fedchenko Glacier, will be of particular importance in assessing the global state of glaciers and climate change.
Let’s take a look at the Fedchenko Glacier here. This glacier is located on the eastern slope of the ridge of the Academy of Sciences in the Pamirs. The length of this glacier is 77 km, its area is 650 km2, its thickness is 700-1000 meters, and its width is 3-5 km2 (average 1800 m). Its total volume is 93.8 km3 of water. This largest regional glacier has melted by nearly 2 square kilometers over the past decade, causing concern among the country’s top leadership.
It should be noted that in Tajikistan a lot has been done to prevent the melting of glaciers and reduce natural disasters. In particular, for the protection and preservation of glaciers, the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan has adopted the “State Program for the Study and Protection of Glaciers of Tajikistan for 2010-2030”. Also on the basis of the Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan on the implementation of this state program the action plan is approved and implemented.
It should be noted that in February 2017, Tajikistan ratified the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which will lay a solid foundation for further joint efforts to address climate change.
