On December 3, 2023, Professor A. Kayumov, Director of the “Center for Glacier Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan”, participated in the side event “Monitoring of Climate Change Impacts in the Cryosphere of Central Asia: Cooperation, Research and Technologies to Improve Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change”. At this side event, Professor A. Kayumov discussed issues related to improving the sustainability of cooperation and projects within the region, as well as the use of technologies by the Glacier Research Center to improve understanding of the role of glaciers and seasonal snow in overall water resources management.
Professor A. Kayumov, Director of the Center, noted that glaciers, snow cover and the cryosphere are studied at a high level in SSI “CGR NAST”, from isotopes to remote sensing. The studies are carried out by expedition method, remote sensing, as well as with the help of long-range drones. The technological potential of the Center allows studying glaciers and snow cover in two directions: fundamental and applied.
Modern technology allows us to prepare a new type of Catalog, which gives a full characterization of water resources by basins. This allows us to fulfill the policy of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Mr. Emomali Rahmon on glacier study and conservation at a high level and to be prepared for the organization and holding of the International Year of Glacier Preservation in 2025. Center has published the Catalog-Atlas of the Fedchenko Glacier System and a reference book, which is attached to it on 1200 pages. In the appendix of this Catalog, the characteristics of the temperature regime, precipitation and other characteristics of the glacier for the last 40 years are given for 30 parameters.
As for the sustainability of projects, Professor A. Kayumov added that this problem is serious in all aspects. As practice and many years of work prove that after the finish of the project there is a problem of team disintegration. In this direction it is necessary to develop a mechanism of project sustainability after completion. The Center is working on the development of project sustainability.
