“CENTER FOR RESEARCH OF GLACIERS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF TAJIKISTAN” RECEIVED INOVATIVE STATIONS FOR GLACIERS STUDY WITHIN THE IMPLEMETATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF GLACIERS PRESERVATION 2025

Today 01.08.2023 State Scientific Institution “Center for research of glaciers of the National Academy of sciences of Tajikistan” (SSI CRG NAST) received from Swiss development partners two stations: Campbell scientific CR1000X and Campbell scientific CR6 for the study of glaciers of the Republic of Tajikistan, which indicates the transition of the Center’s activities to a new level. The most important task of the new stations will be an in-depth study of the main parameters of glaciers in the Republic of Tajikistan and obtaining more detailed information on their state.

The stations were delivered to the SSI CRG NAST for installation at glacier №457 and on the Zulmart glacier.

The functions of the first station, the Campbell scientific CR1000X, which will be installed at Glacier №457 is to measure temperature, humidity, wind, all components of solar radiation, longwave and shortwave incoming and outgoing, and snow thickness. Snow thickness will be measured in two ways:

  • by means of the upper part of the station where distance is measured;

  • by means of the lower part, where GPS signals are installed that change due to snow accumulation at the top and will further serve as a means of measuring snow levels.

The second station, Campbell scientific CR6, will be installed on the Zulmart Glacier, the task of which is to measure the evaporation level of the glacier. Along with the aforementioned components such as temperature, humidity, wind, solar radiation components, and snow thickness, the station will measure turbulent heat flux, which is an important value in the context of global warming.

Receiving the stations was the beginning of opening new opportunities for further study and research of glaciers of the Republic of Tajikistan at higher levels. In this regard, the next step after obtaining the stations is their installation on the glaciers of the Republic of Tajikistan.

At the end of the familiarization procedure with the new stations, the Director of the “Center for research of glaciers of the National Academy of sciences of Tajikistan” (SSI CRG NAST) professor A. Kayumov expressed gratitude on behalf of the Center to the Swiss development partners, in particular the University of Fribourg for active assistance and cooperation.
