Kafirnigan River Basin

The glacial zone of the Kafirnigan River basin is located in the southern part of the Tien Shan mountain system, on the southern slopes of the Gissar Range, which branches off from the eastern segment of the Zeravshan Range. The maximum elevations in this area reach approximately 5000 meters above sea level, while in the western part, individual peaks do not exceed 4500 meters.

Within the Kafirnigan River basin, a total of 327 glaciers have been identified, with a combined area of 106.0 km². Among them, 63 glaciers are smaller than 0.1 km² and occupy a total area of 2.9 km². The average glacier area is thus 0.32 km², increasing to 0.39 km² when excluding glaciers smaller than 0.1 km². Large glaciers are relatively scarce in the basin. Glaciers with an area between 0.1 and 0.9 km² are the most common, comprising approximately two-thirds of the total number. The average altitude of the glacier termini in the Kafirnigan basin is estimated at about 3650 meters.
