The climate of the region is characterized as sharply continental, with extremely harsh winters and a low annual amount of atmospheric precipitation. Despite the arid conditions, a significant number of glaciers are found here. For example, in the basin of Lake Khawarkul, there are more than 400 glaciers, each with an area greater than 0.1 km², and their total area exceeds 560 km². This region features both small cirque glaciers and large, complex dendritic glaciers, such as the Oktyabrsky Glacier, which is one of the largest in the area.
